Dear Parents, Even before anything else, I am a parent. I feel for you. I relate to you. I understand the challenges you face - juggling school, family, home, work and everything else in between. It’s no easy task. Especially, in today’s secular families. You are pulled from all sides and constantly striving to give your child the best. Allow me to share an anecdote. Twenty years ago, I put my daughter in one of the best schools in our area. She always stood first, so as a parent I thought everything was perfectly fine. I didn’t feel the need to worry, and honestly, my demanding work left me with little time to pause and truly be there for her. (I will forever be grateful to my wonderful parents—without their support, I would have been completely lost.) Then, Covid struck. And life took a sharp turn. While catching up on reading, I came across a shocking data that shook me to the core. I chided myself. How did I miss out such important information at the crucial growth time of my child? Here’s the NASA Research: NASA had contacted Dr. George Land and Beth Jarman to develop a special test to measure the creative potential of NASA’s engineers. The test turned out to be successful for NASA’s purposes. However, the scientists were left with a few questions: Where does creativity come from? Are some people born with it or can it be learned? Or does it come from our experience? So, the scientists decided to take this experiment further. A test that looks at the ability to come up with new, different, and innovative ideas to solve problems. Phase 1: The scientists then gave a creative test to 1,600 children between the ages of 4 and 5. What they found shocked them. 98% children fell in the genius category of imagination.

Phase 2: They decided to test the children again, five years later, at the age of ten. Result? Only 30 % children fell in the genius category of imagination. Phase 3: And when the kids were tested at 15 years of age, the figure had dropped to 12 %. This left me flummoxed. How could I not have seen this coming? I felt helpless and miserable. Had I let my daughter down? Looking back, I realized I hadn’t encouraged the small, yet powerful habits that truly shape a child— daily family reading time, journaling, or writing. Instead, it had been a stressful journey of pushing her to keep pace with a redundant curriculum, meaningless school exams, Olympiads that led nowhere, abacus and Vedic maths though interesting, weren’t integrated with school learning and so soon forgotten. Add to that the flood of extra-curriculars—swimming, basketball, chess —all of which came to a grinding halt when she stepped into tenth standard. And in the end, none of those certificates mattered. It dawned on me - What truly matters is a child’s creative thinking. Their ability to read, understand, comprehend, think and write with confidence. Unfortunately, all these often get steamrolled in the race for marks—requisite skills numbed down before they even have the chance to blossom. The thought of my child losing out on academic creative thinking and writing —just because I, as a parent, wasn’t aware—was the clincher. It made me pause and reflect on how easily we overlook the very skills that truly shape a child’s confidence, curiosity, and future. I felt ashamed. Apologetic. This was my wake-up call. A promise I made to myself: To empower every child with creative thinking and writing skills. To nurture reading and writing habits. To keep their curiosity alive through conversations. To be a channel for them to express their thoughts. And above all, to ensure they grow up confident, creative, and compassionate, who go on to write their future.
